Mewhirter Cemetery often called “Mercer”, is a very old cemetery. Just east of it in earlier times was a country school called “The Mewhirter School.” Richard Cotter, a hero of the War of 1812, is buried here. A small stone was erected on his grave in 1921. Only two people have been buried here after 1916. They were Tom and Bob Mercer. Bob Mercer died in December 1953.
To get to Mercer Cemetery, take Highway 92 to M47. Turn south to Pioneer Trail/G66, then east. The cemetery is located just east of 535th Street/M55. The cemetery is north of the intersection. It looks more like a farm lane than a road. The cemetery is on the right and fenced. There is room to park at the gate. DO NOT proceed beyond the cemetery gate. This is private property. The cemetery is visible from Pioneer Trail and an old corn crib sits across the lane from the cemetery.
The cemetery was read south to north, starting nearest the gate. It was read June 2002 by Joyce Hickman.
